Footing – the lowest part of a foundation or load bearing member, located below the frost line and resting directly upon a compacted substrate. A footing is usually made of poured concrete but may consist of stacked masonry blocks. Continuous footings are usually reinforced with re-bar (reinforcing bars). A typical footing for residential construction is usually a minimum of eight inches deep and 16 inches wide.
