Soffit

Soffit

Soffit – The under side of the eaves overhang.  The panel that encloses the area between the fascia board and the frieze board or exterior wall.  The soffit is often vented to allow cooler air to enter as hot air in the attic escapes through the louvers, or other passive or powered vents.

Also the flat under side of any architectural element such as an arch, beam, stair well, or roof overhang but smaller in area than a ceiling.
