Power Washing your house quickly and safely<\/h2>\n

Power washing is a quick effective way to clean your home if done correctly.\u00a0 If you just want to clean your home without having to paint it you must take care not to damage the paint or caulking by using too much pressure.\u00a0 Many pressure washers can produce over 3000 psi of pressure at the tip, which is powerful enough to gouge siding, erode cement or cut through skin, muscle and bone!\u00a0 So before we go any further lets discuss some safety points.<\/p>\n

Power washing safety tips<\/span><\/h2>\n
\n
    \n
  1. Know your machine:\u00a0 whether electrical or gas powered you should take the time to read the operation and safety manuals for your pressure washer.\u00a0 Familiarize yourself with the kill switch and other safety features<\/li>\n
  2. wear safety glasses, goggles or face shield while pressure washing.<\/li>\n
  3. Water conducts electricity:\u00a0 Use caution around service panels, meter bases, overhead wires, electrical outlets and exterior lights to prevent electrocution!\u00a0 Always be aware of where you are spraying and<\/span> where you are going to spray next.<\/li>\n
  4. Mufflers get HOT:\u00a0 If you are using a gas powered pressure washer always remember to avoid\u00a0 touching the muffler.\u00a0 When starting an engine it is common to place one hand on the engine to steady it while pulling the starter cord with the other.\u00a0 Many engines have mufflers located in a position that you might be tempted to place your hand to steady it when pulling the starter cord.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Never use the high pressure jet tip or the narrow fan tips close to the siding.\u00a0 Never direct the spray at yourself or others as the pressures generated by power washing are extremely dangerous.\u00a0 It is OK to use the high pressure tip to reach high areas on the house.\u00a0 Just be aware of the extreme pressures generated and use common sense in not allowing the jet to damage the house.<\/p>\n

    When installing or changing tips always point in a safe direction\u00a0 (at the ground)\u00a0 before pulling the trigger for the first time.\u00a0 (If the tip is not seated properly the water pressure will turn it into a projectile capable of breaking windows or causing injuries)<\/p>\n

    Pay close attention to where you are spraying.\u00a0 The high pressure will force water under or around doors and window and into wall vents, soffit vents and attic vents.<\/p>\n

    Cleaning your home<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

    There are many cleaners available that are marketed just for power washing but an effective and economical alternative is Surf liquid laundry detergent mixed at the rate of about 8 to 16 ounces per gallon of water.\u00a0 If mildew is present add up to 32 ounces of bleach to each gallon of water.\u00a0 Wear protective clothing and eye protection.\u00a0 Apply using the low pressure siphon tip of the pressure washer or use a pump up sprayer.\u00a0\u00a0 (Surf laundry detergent is biodegradable<\/a> ~ if rinsed down with copious amounts of water neither it nor\u00a0 bleach<\/a> is harmful to plants or animals)<\/p>\n

    Thoroughly soak one area or wall at the time with clear water along with any nearby plants. Immediately go over the same area again, this time using cleaning solution, and allow the cleaning solution to\u00a0 work for three to five minutes.\u00a0\u00a0 You can repeat the previous steps on the next area while waiting for the cleaner to work on the first area, just don’t let it dry before rinsing.<\/p>\n

    Once the cleaning solution has had time to work on an area for a few minutes rinse it down completely with clear water until all sign of soap residue is gone.\u00a0 Never let the cleaning solution dry on the wall as it will redeposit the dirt that had been loosened. Remember to rinse down any plants that may have come into contact with the cleaning solution.<\/p>\n

    When power washing is completed inspect the entire house, especially around doors and windows to determine if any caulking or paint was damaged .\u00a0\u00a0 Allow house to dry thoroughly before applying any caulking and paint.<\/p>\n

    Power washing can be a challenge for some but the benefits of a clean, attractive and well maintained home easily justify the time and expense of this project.<\/p>\n
