Tread

Tread – in a set of stairs, the horizontal surface of a step upon which one walks. They can be made of almost any rigid material, such as wood, metal or stone, that is capable of supporting the load requirements of the stairs. Treads may be painted, stained, covered with carpet or anti-slip coatings or left natural.
