In classical architecture, a corbel served as a load-bearing element, often near the roof line where it might support a ledge or other protrusion. In modern usage, it is often a design element that implies fine craftsmanship by adding an ornate aspect to a structure or some feature therein.

A variety of brackets, affixed under cabinets, shelves, or countertops, are now commonly referred to as corbels and may be structural or ornamental. Some constructions elements, such as exposed rafters or projecting beams, may have angled or decorative ends that are referenced as corbel ends.
