Picture Frame Border

Picture frame border – a design element in floors, especially deck or porch floors. The design is achieved by installing mitered floorboards around the perimeter of the floor area.

This type border on a deck presents a more elegant aesthetic than on decks with visible end cuts. Double or even triple borders are sometimes used to further enhance the appearance of a floor. Additional structural framing is required anytime this type border is used. The additional framing is necessary to ensure that the border flooring as well as the ends of the remaining floor boards are properly supported and secured. Another way to hide the unsightly end of floor boards is to inset them flush with a raised outer rim joist or install fascia trim.
