Purlin
– a horizontal member that runs perpendicular to the rafters in a framed roof. Parallel rows of purlins may rest atop the rafters and support the roof-deck which is nailed or screwed into the purlins. Purlins may also be attached to the tops of exposed rafters such as are found on a pergola. When used in this manner, they stabilize the rafters to prevent twisting or warping, afford additional shade and enhance the aesthetics of the structure. A purlin plate may run under and support the central expanse of rafters, allowing longer spans than unsupported rafters could attain, thus facilitating the construction of wider buildings.
