Galvanized metal

Galvanized metal

Galvanized metal – any steel or iron which has been encapsulated with a corrosion resistant zinc coating either by hot dipping the metal in molten zinc or electroplating the metal with zinc.  This galvanization process protects the metal in two ways:

  • the coating forms a corrosion resistant barrier which prevents corrosive materials from contacting the underlying metal
  • The zinc continues to protect the metal even if it becomes scratched by acting as a sacrificial anode
