The Postsaver® sleeve, first developed for the fencing industry, is now a first line of defense against ground line rot of treated posts in many applications such as deck support posts, piers, mail box or cloths line posts, arbor posts or any other application where treated posts are buried.
A Postsaver® sleeve consists of a heat shrinkable thermoplastic sleeve with low melt point bituminous liner. The sleeve is positioned over the end of the post that will go into the ground. Heat is then applied using a high output, wide flame torch. As heat from the torch shrinks the non toxic outer sleeve snugly onto the post, the inner (tar like) bituminous liner liquefies and creates an impenetrable air tight waterproof seal around the post. Unlike dipped or painted on liquid coatings a Postsaver® sleeve remains impenetrable, even as the wood post ages, cracks, or splits.
Changes in the the wood treating process, brought about by environmental concerns, have resulted in more Eco-friendly lumber but with a corresponding reduction in protection against the elements. Unlike treated posts of years past, today’s treated deck posts are significantly more vulnerable to decay and termites often leading to premature structural failure. Using a Postsaver® sleeve on every deck post provides a sound solution to these problems. With a 20 year no rot warranty they can extend the life of deck posts beyond the serviceable life of the deck.
