Joist Tape

A type of tape applied to the top edge of deck or porch floor joists or girders. It acts as flashing in order to shed water off the joist and promote faster drying. Joist tape consists of a black or grey top side that blends with the shadows between floor boards. The bottom adhesive side may be butyl based in order to better seal around the nails or screws that secure the floor boards to the joists. UV inhibitors prevent any sun light that may find it’s way between the gaps in the flooring from degrading the the tape.

The methods of treating lumber have evolved to make it more environmentally friendly. However, this also allows the lumber to decay in persistently wet environments. Taping joists promotes faster drying of a deck or porch. For this reason, applying joist tape is now considered a best practice by many builders. Older decks getting new floor boards benefit from joist tape which prevent moisture from collecting in cracks or nail holes.
