Stair Stringer
Stair Stringer – a structural member of stairs which supports the treads and risers. Most residential stringers are made from standard size 2×10 or 2×12 lumber with stringers for decks and porches utilizing treated lumber. Typically stairs require a minimum of three stringers and usually four or more as the width of the stairs increase.
A stair stringer may be cut to provide the desired height and width (rise and run) of the steps or it may be dadoed to receive the treads and risers. Cleats are also sometimes attached to an uncut stringer board as an alternate and less elegant means of supporting the treads and risers.
