In architectural terms, a transom is a transverse horizontal member or crosspiece separating a window or door from another window located directly above. In contrast to the vertically oriented mullion which separates two windows or a door and sidelites.
A transom window or lite (light) is a window, usually the same width as the transom, located over a door or window. Before air conditioners were invented most transom windows opened, allowing air to circulate and providing some additional light while the door was closed to provide security and privacy. Most transom windows no longer open.
